Mud

There is a debate raging in certain circles about nature versus nurture, especially as it relates to gender and gender rolls (i.e. the debate about sexuality - see our post on Pride).  We give boys dolls and give girls trucks to ensure that our kids grow up gender neutral and that we as parents are not nurturing them to be one way versus the other.

And then we get to mud.  Mud, this sticky, wet brown substance that makes a kid really dirty.  Today at the playground, the girls played around the mud.  Oh sure, they got wet from the water spray and they were even the ones carefully carting buckets of water over to a pile of dirt to make the mud, but they had nary a spec of it on them.

But not Jack.

At first Jack tested it out.  And then he began to really play in it.

He even tasted it.

Yup, our boy was fully covered in mud from head to toe and having a blast.  He looked like an advertisement for Tide.  All the little girls at the playground kept coming up to me telling me he was dirty, in case I didn't know.

Mud, further evidence that sometimes you are just born this way.
